How are you performing research on Citizen Science, taking part in Citizen Science activities and/or supporting Citizen Science?:
I am currently the coordinator of a 3-years participatory action research project called ValueBugs. It involves citizens and several academic and non-academic partners to develop a new method of decentralized organic waste valorisation based on black soldier fly larvae. Our work involves various fields: research and development of new breeding and rearing techniques, urban network and logistic transportation optimization, sanitary studies and policy making, circular economy… Citizens are involved at each steps of the research through a complete co-creation process. Aside from laboratory research, my job in this project is too make sure that citizens acquire knowledge and receive all the required support to achieve the goal of THEIR project.

Brief description of project:
ValueBugs involves citizens and several academic and non-academic partners to develop a new method of decentralized organic waste valorisation based on black soldier fly larvae (BSFL). Main goal is to co-create a method to rear BSFL with organic waste at home and use the pupae to feed laying hens, fishes in aquaponic systems and pets. This research investigates various fields: research and development of new breeding and rearing techniques, urban network and logistic transportation optimization, sanitary studies and policy making, circular economy… Citizens are involved at each steps of the research through a complete co-creation process. Ultimately, we hope to create a new method that can be as popular and resilient in the Brussels region as worms composting.
