The mission of the CRG is to discover and advance knowledge for the benefit of society, public health and economic prosperity. The CRG believes that the medicine of the future depends on the groundbreaking science of today. This requires an interdisciplinary scientific team focused on understanding the complexity of life from the genome to the cell to a whole organism and its interaction with the environment, offering an integrated view of genetic diseases.
How are you performing research on Citizen Science, taking part in Citizen Science activities and/or supporting Citizen Science?:
CRG is performing Citizen Sciences via projects "Stick out your tongue/ Saca La lengua" and "Genigma"

Brief description of project:
‘Stick Out Your Tongue’ (‘Saca la Lengua’) is a citizen’s science project that aims to study the mouth’s microbiome and its possible relationship with our environmental characteristics and lifestyle. The 1st edition was in 2015. The 2nd edition started at the end of 2016 and will continue until September 2018. This project has involved citizens at all three of its levels: 1. During the first phase of both editions, we collected citizen ideas and variables through this website that were incorporated into the initial hypothesis for the scientific project. 2. During the second phase of both editions, we collected about 1600 saliva samples and questionnaires of citizens environmental characterisics and lifestyle. In 2015 the target were data from 15-year-old high school students , in 2017 we collected saliva from the same students 2 years after and other age and vulnerable collectives (such as individuals with Down síndrome, cystic fibrosis, and celiac disease). The volunteers were chosen across Spain to ensure that they represent the different geographic, social and ecological realities of the country. 3. In the third phase od the 1st edition, we released all data of the Project and we asked for help from schools, universities and the general public to analyse these data through a contest. We proposed different challenges at different levels, in statistics, data visualization and bioinformatics. For the 2nd edition, this phase will starts in april 2018.
