The Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) at the University of York, is an independent research organisation which aims to link science and policy in the fields of environment and development. Our York centre has particular expertise in both citizen science, having been involved in running, designing and evaluating projects since 2008.
How are you performing research on Citizen Science, taking part in Citizen Science activities and/or supporting Citizen Science?:
We have been doing and researching citizen science projects since 2008, the largest of which is the UK-wide OPAL (Open Air Laboratories) project which has engaged nearly a million people with their local environment. Our role in OPAL is working in the region of Yorkshire, particularly focusing on working with deprived communities around brownfield sites. We are also leading the work on the Air survey. We are also designing the citizen science elements of the Moors for the Future Partnership's Community Science Project, and have recently completed a pilot study exploring air pollution (particulate matter) in an informal settlement in Nairobi, Kenya. We have scientists and social scientists on our team, and have conducted various studies looking at the experience of participants in citizen science.
